DATA ANALYSIS
MOVEMENT MATTERS
products
Movement Matters is a structured data analysis process that will help you determine the effectiveness of your individual classroom teachers, programs, grade-levels, and departments. School and district leaders use the Movement Matters method to:
  • Inform administrators of areas of strength and weakness by individual teacher, program, grade-level, and/or department (This has been especially helpful for administrators charged with creating the perfect master schedule)
  • Humble complacent and ineffective teachers, not allowing them to hide behind school wide test scores
  • Provide administrators and teachers impartial data that can be used to drive best practices, professional development, and peer walkthroughs
  • Understand accountability models set forth by state and federal legislation
  • Springboard results-oriented dialogue within professional learning communities.

There are five steps in the Movement Matters process:

STEP 1. Identify Proficiency Level Movement Reports
The overarching goal of Movement Matters is to objectively assign value to student proficiency level movement (or lack thereof) from one year to the next in the areas of English-Language Arts and Mathematics. The first step in the process is to identify and understand reports (e.g., pivot tables) that illustrate this movement.

STEP 2:  Calculate Growth Index (GI)
The second step is Growth Index score calculations for each report examined. Dr. Wiseman and a colleague developed the Growth Index Formula to help lend a hand in quantifying student movement from one year to the next. The article Growth index: A powerful tool for school improvement introduces the formula, and can be viewed in the September/October Issue of the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Leadership Magazine.

STEP 3: Calculate Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)
Next, base and actual AYP scores are calculated based on the movement in each report examined. Just as states announces school- and district-wide AYP scores, percentages of students scoring Proficient or above can also be calculated for individual teachers, programs, grade-levels, and departments.

STEP 4: Calculate Academic Performance Index (API)
The last of the three calculations is base and actual API scores. As you know, API is a weighted accountability model used in California to measure schools’ progress. Again, the same calculations can be made for individual teachers, programs, grade-levels, and departments.

STEP 5: Program Analysis
The last step is to place each of the three data sets (Growth Index, AYP scores, and API scores) side-by-side. This information helps verify the effectiveness of each constituent in your school or district. To help save countless hours computing each of the three data sets, Dr. Wiseman offers the Movement Matters Calculation Sheet and the Movement Matters School-wide Calculation Sheet. Get both spreadsheets by visiting the Products page. Simply type in the students' proficiency level movement and the calculation sheets do the rest.
